Oberliga Niederrhein, Round 23: (March 8, 2002)
Disgraceful defeat in derby! The END is near!
OK, maybe not that dramatic. But almost 50 years of domination by the
Lions in the the 'Tal have now officially come to an end, with this
disgraceful defeat to the upstarts Borussia. And you really can't
complain, because, to be quite honest, Borussia outplayed WSV and fully
deserved to win.
From the start, the "guests" put pressure on the WSV defense, and as
defensive midfielder Sven Steup had to leave early with an injury, the WSV
defense began to crap out. Bendyk took advantage of the chaos at the back
to bring Borussia in the lead. Luckily, WSV was back a few minutes later,
as Alex Kohout finished off a powerful run by blasting in his 14th.
However, Borussia had the answer for WSV's lackadaisical play. Just before
the halftime whistle, Ersoy lifted a free kick into the WSV net for the go
ahead goal.
After Borzek nailed a quick goal on the restart, WSV then had their best
chance to get back into the game as ex-WSV player Christian Broos did them
a favor. He deliberately handled a ball by knocking it off the goal line,
so he got his ass tossed. Euler put home the ball, but WSV dicked around
and couldn't get anything done. Then Klemmer equalized things again and
got his butt thrown out for a dirty foul. The game then petered out as
Borussia then brought home the victory.
The match itself was somewhat marred by some alleged nasty behavior of
WSV-fans. Broos was incensed at all the catcalling, stating "Hey, I played
over 200 games for WSV, more than their whole starting 11." Yeah,
whatever. You should have been enjoying your brewski and watching the
game, since you got an early "day-off" from work :)
Also disappointing was the small crowd of only 3,000, some 2,000 less than
the first meeting, even though both teams are at the top of the table.
All in all, a deserved victory for Borussia. WSV is going to have to come
up with something better...
