Oberliga Nordrhein, Round 4:
Disappointment for WSV, as they once again sucked in a local derby against
a somewhat revived Borussia. Despite being a heavy favorite, WSV was
unable to impress, and instead it was the Borussen once again who
determined the pace. The small crowd for such a local derby seems to
indicate once again that WSV's fans have almost given up, and the season
has hardly started. (Just last season, the first Borussia-WSV clash drew
over 5,000.)
Things started out bad for WSV, as after just a couple of minutes Kurtz
put the guests in the lead. A screwup in the WSV defense led to the easy
goal. WSV reacted with some pressure, but overall was having problems with
their faster opponents. After about 20 minutes, a contraversial action in
the Borussia box as Ebersbach was hauled down. But instead of a penalty,
he was carded for diving.
WSV evened the score after 25 minutes with the goal of the year. Tavarez
executed a perfect bicycle kick from just outside the box into the upper
corner of the net.
In the 2nd half, things remained somewhat static. WSV tried to press, but
was unable to control the play. Then a defensive relapse allowed Benedyk
unmarked in front of Maly; his header did not miss. WSV increased the
pressure, and with about a quarter-hour later, Ebersbach, the best
attacker, was able to even the score. WSV continued to have some chances
through to the end (Rietz had his shot cleared off the line), but the
Borussia defense was able to bring things home.
For WSV, not the result they wanted, especially since Borussia had gotten
off to a slow start this season, and this was a good opportunity not only
to grab the points, but to kick their rivals when they're down. The
absence of forward Alex Kohout revealed a lack of bite in attack, so
coach Georg Kreß needs to go back to the drawing board.
As far as the rest of the league, WSV didn't lose too much ground, but
Bonner SC has emerged a a surprise early challenger, thanks to a stunning
win in Velbert.
