Oberliga Nordrhein, Round 7:
For the first time in ages, WSV comes through with an important win. This
would be the first major test of the season, and contrary to usual form,
WSV was up to the task.
Head coach Georg Kreß was back in charge after his short hospital
stay, and made some slight changes in the defensive realm. This was to
anticipate Fortuna's likely offensive pressure. Vladimir Hyza was moved
back into a strictly defensive role, and Thomas Rietz got his first start
in midfield. This move proved to be ecellent, as the WSV solid defensive
play laid the groundwork for victory.
WSV started off cool against teh aggressive Fortuna, with control play and
dangerous assaults over forwards Ebersbach and Kohout. This led to a quick
goal as the ex-Velberter once again hit the net. Jean-Louis Tavarez was
the midfield leader, and Oliver Ebersbach took full advamatge to give WSV
the lead.
In the 2nd half, Fortuna threw any remaining caution into the wind, and
launched furious assaults on the WSV goal. But the defense was solid, and
GK Maly handled any threats without much difficulty. Ebersbach finished
things off with a late penalty that iced the win.
The only negatives was WSV being a bit lax on the defensive end when
concerning crosses - too many and too easily achieved. This led to
Fortuna creating some serious chances near the end. Up until then,
despite Fortuna pressure, WSV had easily negated any threats. Also Mirko
Stark got his ass tossed for repeated fouls near the end of the game.
All in all, a great victory for WSV, their first impressive win in years.
