Oberliga Nordrhein, Round 17:
A stunning victory of epic proportions, never before witnessed in the
annals of WSV-dom. OK, It's perhaps not so dramatic, but the fact is that
Fortuna is probably WSV's heated rival, and a victory of any type is
sweet. For those who remember the old 2.Division Regionalliga and
Bundesliga days, any type of victory against Fortuna was hard to come by.
Even though today's Duesseldorf is a toothless lion, wiping them out
surely is a special pleasure for WSV fans.
From the start, it was clear that WSV would dominate the match. They
started out strong, with Thomas Rietz continuing his improving performance
as he banged in a shout from around 20 yards after only 12 minutes.
Fortuna reacted momentarily, the next 5 minutes probably their best piece
of the match, pressuring WSV back. However, the defense was solid,
and when Mirko Stark moved up front to put WSV up 2-0, things were
almost decided. Duesseldorf had one last chance to get back into
the game, but in the 41st minute, Christian Maly stopped a penalty
kick, and WSV went into the cabins with a 2-0 lead.
In the 2nd half, WSV came out for blood, as Georg Kress must have sensed
that an all-out attack would annihilate the guests. And he was right. In
an attacking dispplay seldom seen in recent years at the Zoo, WSV
steamrollered the hapless Duesseldorfers, and goals began rolling in like
cash in a whorehouse. Stark, ebersbach and Kipre (twice) banged in goals
to complete the rout.
In his post-game conference, Kress was obviously happy, although he did
seem a bit surprise at the final result. To add icing on the cake, this
weekend's results put WSV in 1st place, with a game in hand. Things might
be looking up; perhaps the Regionalliga is within reach afterall...
