Regionalliga Nord, Round 4:
Carneval in the Zoo-Stadion, as a nice crowd of over 12,000 showed up;
certainly the largest in years. And the fans did not go home disappointed,
as WSV put on a great show against the ex-Bundesligist and cult favorite
from the Reeperbahn.
St.Pauli started out well, as WSV's defense was a bit loose, and Cory
Gibbs and Sager both had some chances through headers. But then things
tightened up, and WSV began to steamroller the Paulistas. The lead came on
a fluke, as Markus Bayertz' weak effort bounced off Marc Narewsky and
into the net. The fans exploded into cheers and WSV redoubled their
efforts. They were soon rewarded, as Ales Kohout was chopped down in
the box, and Oliver Ebersbach knocked home the penalty.
With the match clearly in grip, WSV shifted gear, and waited for St.Pauli
to attack. With a solid defense, this presented no threat. However the
Wuppertal counters were quite threatening, and on one of these raids the
outstanding Narewsky caught nice slicing pass from Walbroehl to rip home
the 3rd.
The large crowd cheered loudly after the match ended, and the only "down"
note was coach Georg Kress sound advice to the players to not let things
go to their heads. Nevertheless, an outstanding result for WSV.
