Regionalliga Nord, Round 16:
By winning this top-of-the-table clash, WSV sensationally ensured the
"Fall Championship" (Herbstmeisterschaft), to lead at the halfway mark. If
anyone had predicted this at the start of the season, they would have been
judged looney.
Things started off shaky, as Bremen immediately launched assaults on the
WSV goal, and Christian Maly was forced to make a couple of good saves.
After about 10 minutes, Tavarez led the first WSV counters. A few minutes
later, some hard play led to yellow cards on both sides, and WSV was also
denied a penalty, as Ebersbach was trampled.
After 32 minutes, however, WSV took the lead. Alex Kohout got in a
cross, and Ebersbach one-timed the shot out of the air, giving WSV a
1-0 lead. Some 300 WSV travelling fans cheered lustily.
In the 2nd half, Bremen came out storming, and again it was a superb Maly
that prevented any equalizing goal. Things got worse as Kohout got his 2nd
yellow for a nasty tackle, and his ass was tossed. Bremen's pressure
however was unable to crack the stout WSV defense.
After the game, WSV coach Georg Kress praised his team's discipline and
"the best goal keeper in the league, Christian Maly". He also felt that
Bremen was strong enough for the 2.Liga, "even though they can't be
promoted." Meanwhile, Bremen coach Thorsten Wolters instead whined and
sniveled on how his team was the better team and lost...
