WSV Preseason Roster Review

Goalkeeping

This appears to be a question mark for WSV. Jochen Gramse is a holdover from last season, but he was not the starter. He will battle it out with newcomer Nils Heese, but figures to have the edge. Gramse has shown in the past that he is capable of excellent performances, but has also come up lame at times.

Overall Grade: B-

Defense

Lots of holes need to be plugged, as most of the squad is unproven. Richard Mademann figures to be the leader, with Frank Klemmer the only other returning player.

Overall Grade: B-

Midfield

Another question mark, but at least there appear to be some signs of progress. Despite massive turnover, this is potentially a decent group. Gabi Raduta has finally shown signs of becoming a key figure, and some of the new players have shown signs of fitting in nicely.

Overall Grade: B

Offense

Every year, this is a rather laughable group. WSV used to be able to score goals in buckets, but those days are long gone. Actually, last season Gerrit Meinke developed into a promising threat, as he bagged 16 goals. So of course he's gone!

Overall Grade: C

Coaching

A new coach in Frantisek Straka, and assistant Vlatko Glavas. Unlike previous years, they have a lot of young, but potentially talented players to deal with. Both coaches have only recently hung up their spikes, so perhaps they still remember what it's like to be a player. Considering the little preparation time, Straka appears to have started off decently.

Overall Grade: B

Management

What can you say? The bankrupt policies have practically ruined the club. A drop to the Oberliga is the result. About the only positive thing you can say is that perhaps now some common sense is entering the picture, and it can't get any worse.

Overall Grade: F

Summary

This is a completely rebuilt team, so it is impossible to really gain any insight until the season actually starts. However, based on what little evidence is available, the squad doesn't look half bad. A lot of young foreign players have been brought in, but they need to had more home grown talent. Early indications are that WSV should be able to contend for the Oberliga Nordrhein title.

Overall Team Grade: B-
