These fifteen photos were made December 3, 1998.
Community members and students spoke for several hours that evening to city and school
district officials at a meeting at Elsie Allen High School in Santa Rosa, California.
A student, Patrick Scott, had been struck by a car and killed while walking on a
dangerous stretch of road near the entrance to the school. There were no sidewalks along the road,
although it had been regarded as a dangerous situation for several years. Following
the meeting that night, students spontaneously constructed a path made of pallets
through the mud so they wouldn't have to walk on the shoulder of the road right next to traffic.
The students' efforts and the death of Scott prompted the quick construction of a paved pathway. (Clicking on the small photos will link to a larger version of the same photo.)
