While living at the Johnson home and farm, on March 24, 1832, the 11 month old Murdock twins, who Joseph and Emma had adopted, were ill, suffering from the measles. Joseph and Emma were tending to them in a trundle bed, such as this one, inside the Johnson home where they were living. A mob of over 40 men burst in and took Joseph and tarred and feathered him. They tried unsuccessfully to pour a vial full of nitric acid down his throat. In the struggle, a tooth was broken causing Joseph to have a slight lisp. During the mobbing, 11 month old Joseph (Murdock) Smith contracted a cold and died five days later. Some call him the first martyr for the Church.
