In the beginning, banjos were homemade, made by African slaves. A quote from Thomas Jefferson in 1781: "The instrument proper to them (i.e. the slaves) is the Banjar, which they brought hither from Africa."

During the minstrel area, the banjo became a prop for white men using blackface as a comic gimmick.
