The Manhattan Project, which resulted in the development of the Atomic Bomb,  was carried out in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, WWII's Secret City.  Oak Ridge developed into a large city almost overnight, reaching a population of 75,000.  What was life like at Oak Ridge?  As you can see here, lines for everything.  Every resident over 12 years of age had to wear an identification badge at all times.  All football games for the local high school were played away.  The opposing team was not given a roster of player names, only their numbers.  The people lived in tents, trailers, dormitories, and some single-family dwellings called cemestos.
