The road trace to the left is the remnant of the Richmond-Lynchburg Stage Road.  On April 9, 1865, Robert E Lee planned to use this road to escape West and then hopefully turn South and join Joe Johnston's army in North Carolina.  When the Federals blocked the route, he had no alternative but to surrender.  The man and his horse on the right are General Grant and Cincinnati, the horse he rode into the Village on April 9, 1865, to meet General Lee.   On April 12, about 5,000 Federal troops lined the Richmond Lynchburg Stage Road to receive the weapons, etc. of Lee's infantry.
