After floating in a small life raft for almost three hours, LTJG Bush spotted a submarine in the distance.  As the vessel moved closer, he was able to see a large, bearded figure on the bridge holding a black object.  This was Ensign Bill Edwards with a camera, who took this photograph of the rescue.

This is the written account and picture of the rescue of George Bush after the downing by anti-aircraft fire of the plane he was flying during World War II.
