In February 2003 I visited Sri Lanka, an incredible island country of majestic nature and soft sand beaches. On the southern coast near the town of Weligama the beaches are lined with fishing catamarans. The days catch is sold on the main road and it is a beautiful bay. Just north of there exists the "Stilt Fishermen" who sit perched daily on poles in a shallow ocean area. They fish using only bamboo poles and simple hooks without bait. For centuries these poles and positions have been handed down from with the sea and fish running the same direction they climb their poles and spend up to eight hours a day on their perch.
