My Experiance with QuickTime VR

QuickTime VR is Apples way of re-creating environments from a central point and being able to navigate from that point in a panoramic perspective. You also have the ability to zoom in and out. The tools used were a 35 mm camera, tripod, 400 asa film, color processing of prints, scanner to make electronic digital files, Power Computing 150mhz with 80mb of ram running mac os 7.5.5, Make qtvr 1.0b4 an Apple application, Pictureworks SpinPanorama 4.5 and Adobe Photoshop 4.0.

I set up my tripod in the CIS 123 lab at the College of Marin in Novato, California and asked some people to not move for a few minutes. Using my 28 mm lens I then placed my Nikon Fm2 vertically and took 12 photographs that overlapped each other by 20-50%. I then had the film developed and scanned the prints at high resolution. Using the program Spin Panorama I was able to create a large pict file of all the images. The program had aligning circles to bring together adjacent images by using the mouse and then stitch together these photos. Making a large image it then created a cylindrical panorama of all the images blending with each other.

I then spent many hours re-aligning the architecture and objects in the lab. What happens is, objects are photographed at slightly different perspectives and do not seam up 100%. I basically had to retouch everywhere where there were windows, beams, computers, chairs, carpet seams, horizontal and vertical lines. The image ends up being a tremendous curve and you must rebuild some objects so that there is no overlapping and things are in full registration. I spent about 17 hours on this project. Enjoy it, there will be a lot more coming real soon.
