Trebonianus Gallus Silver Coins

Antioch Mint First and Second Issue

The first issue shows Gallus undraped and with a fine style portrait with officina marks only on the obverse, the second issue is the same but uses officina marks on both  sides of the coins, while the third issue coins show Gallus draped with a coarse style portrait.     I am starting to collect data on all the officina marks.  The officina data for Gallus Antioch coins in RIC isn't of much use because it mixes all the issues.

There is an excellent article on these coins written by William Metcalf that can be found in ANS Museum Notes 22 entitled The Antioch Hoard of Antoniniani and the Eastern Coinage of Trebonianus Gallus and Volusian.

88 IMP CC VIB TREB GALLVS  PF AVG Bust radiate, draped, cuirassed  r. An odd reverse for an emperor, and quite rare.  Perhaps this reverse was intended for Herennia Etruscilla only.   These coins belong to the earliest issue for Gallus at Antioch (even before the '1st issue') which are characterized by fine style, draped or cuirassed bust, and no reverse officina marking.

IMP CC VIB TREB GALLVS  PF AVG Bust radiate, r. shoulder back Unlisted bust type - I am not sure which issue this coin belongs to - I have never seen bust type on any Antioch antoninianii of Gallus, but is fairly common on coins of Hostilian AVG and Volusian.  Also, the reverse legend is blundered.

Update Feb. 2012: I now have seen two coins with this bust.  See the unlisted RIC 92 below.

Some references have made the 'UDERITAS' spelling out to be a different type, but the B and D on these coins look so close that it can result from just a week strike that doesn't make a clear central line through the B.  So I don't think it is like the other genuine misspellings.

middle coin: Gallus' Antioch antoninianii generally follow the rule that if they are cuirassed only, then they are fine style; if they are draped an cuirassed, then they have a coarse style portrait, but a small percentage of the draped bust coins break that rule, as this one does. mint vii/-
