Hi! Does anyone out there know of a McDougall support group anywhere in Virginia or around Washington DC? Sometimes I wonder if we are the only 2 McDougallers here? MIght contact our vegan meet up group in Roanoke to see what's up there.

thanks veggiecat. I went to the vegetarian society many years ago and we had some fantastic pot lucks. I need to get back there again.

I don't know enough starchitarians in the DC area.

PattiL, how are you doing on your dietary choices?

Hey Starchbeet & Cat,

Thanks to both of you for your reply.

I am having such a great time cooking and following Mary McD's cookbooks! My husband, Mike and I are doing very well one month now into the program. We truly don't miss anything from the SAD, and this food is so yummy and satisfying. I love sweet potatoes, always have and yams too. I'm becoming pretty good with a different homemade soup nearly everyday, and we have discovered Cargo Red Rice from the Asian stores in Roanoke. It's so easy to prepare rice, and I can easily say that we have never eaten so well!! We love greens, too and I feel this is so balanced a diet. We've come a long way to now finally have "come home"
This lifestyle fits me just like a glove.
I do think we are the only McDougallers here in SW Virginia, so I am so very grateful to have you all to talk with here on this neat discussion board.

All the best,

Patti L

That is so wonderful Patti!!

I found some sort of red/wild rice from the asian store that I put into the "garlic soup" recipe. I haven't seen the red rice but I'll look.

I suppose I'll stock up on some rice given the current problem in Japan.

I am sure I can find support around me but I don't have any yet. Since I haven't had support I've used that excuse for not choose this lifestyle for so many years that now I can't use it any longer. I'm determined to be responsible for the second "half" of my life. Knowing how the "starchitarian" life-style improves your health I can't see any other way to be. Now those emergency situations I need to prepare for better still.

There is so much helpful information to learn here. Keep up the fun, healthy and beneficial cooking and eating!

-Julie

there is a number of us on the board who get together once in a while. A matter of fact, you could search the main board and a picture of some of us will come up. We do not meet regularly but a couple times a year try to do a lunch. Usually it revolves around a mcdougaller coming into the area for a visit. Some of us have grown very close and have good friendships due to meeting up and announcing it here.

Oh are you going to Summerfest? Many of us go to that also.

Faith...that name sounds familiar. Do you have a diabetic daughter?
I remember a Faith at vegetarian meeting in early 80's. She/you was such a nice woman!

No that wasn't me. No daughter nor anyone in my family is diabetic. I feel for her. But I'm still nice :-P

I haven't gotten out to any VSDC things in a few years. I became veggie in 1995.

What part of Virginia are you?

Are you on the Veg-DC list?

Have you seen we just got a Loving Hut Restaurant? I also got a flyer from a Chinese restaurant in ARlington, who has revamped and has many vegan options now. I wrote them a couple days ago to question if they use fish sauce and if they are positive their meat subs are vegan.

Im glad you're nice too Faith. That is a common trait with vegans!

Thanks for the info on summerfest. I wasn't aware of that event. It looks superb.

I actually live in Mont Co, in Silver Spring.

That restaurant sounds fantastic. I was dreaming about opening a vegan catering business. I could attempt to give options to current catering businesses or event services. I like to dream. :-P

Faith, what's the name of the Chinese restaurant? My company's main office is relocating to Arlington in a few weeks and I've love to be aware of some options for when I visit.

BTW this menu they have posted on the site is their typical Chinese menu. They stuck in a whole seperate menu labelled Vegan Vegetarian.

gosh I hope you see this.

There is a couple places right there. Hard Times is great for a chili mac or chili salad. This place I haven't tried yet but other veggies said it was good http://www.toscanagrill.com/.

That area isn't too bad for veggie food and many places are veg friendly. Too bad you missed one of the most fun ones of all called 'Claire and Don's' Get it? It was beach food. They are now in Falls Church.

If you see the old house with tombstones next to BBT - my son is the stone cutter.
