John Corzine took this picture of me peering into the maw of Eklutna Glacier. A river of melting ice rushes below. The remarkable thing about standing so close to this glacier was the sudden realization of its movement. Even though the river noise was quite loud here, I could still hear the intermittent rumblings of ice grinding against rock. I had to retreat quickly when small boulders began bounding from the top of this great moving mass.
