Barkeria uniflora imported seed #5937 (approximately 25 seedlings per flask). This is seed is from Michoacan. The Species: Found on the Pacific slopes in Mexico where it grows as a twig epiphyte at elevaions from 2300 to 5600 ft. The species is usually in the 7" tall range, but very well grown plants can be up to 16" tall. The inflorescence comes from the top of the recently matured pseudobulb and can be branched. Despite the name suggesting a single flower, this species can have multiple flowers on an inflorescence. Culture: Give this species moderately bright to bright light from fall through spring with shadier conditions in the summer. In the habitat winter nights are in low 50's F and the days are in the mid-80's. Summer nights are in the upper mid 60's F and days are 80's F to mid-90's F. Plants I have grown have done well with daytime temperatures lower than in nature and bloom them regularly. They are watered daily with dilute fertilizerand are dry by the next day in the spring through fall. Because the rainfall is less in the winter, I decrease water and fertilizer. Allow the plants to dry between waterings, but do not let them be dry for extended periods of time. Light mistings should prevent any shrivelling of the pseudobulbs. I do not have images of the parents so show a Barkeria uniflora from my colleciton. |
