Sold out Cattleya ×dolosa alba 4N 'Iwata’s Yuki No Hana’ AM/AOS x self #4032 (approximately 25 seedlings per flask). The clonal name translate to 'Snow Flake'. This is a natural hybrid and is designated as such by the "×" preceeding the name. History: This is a very special offerring and a bit of background is in order. The original parentage of this cross starts with a very fine Cattleya ×dolosa alba collected 2n (diploid) plant that Ruben Saluda selfed. From that selfing there was a chance 4n plant among the seedlings. That 4N plant was selfed to produce the seed for this flask. The fact that it is a naturally occurring 4N is one reason it is such a good grower unlike so many of the chemically treated 4N plants (with colchicine) that can have odd growths and can be very difficult to maintain in good health. If you carefully look at all the xdolosa alba that have been awarded, it is clear that this parent is far superior to those that have a higher award. For one, the flowers are perfect with no defects. Another standout feature is how the lip closes over the column and all the others do not do this. It has incredible substance and a crystalline texture. Growth habit is clean, tall, erect, close internodes and it does not “walk” like so many others do. It often blooms more than once per year. The Natural Hybrid: Found in Brazil in the states of Minas Gerias and São Paulo, it is frequently found growing on streamside trees. It is a compact, bifoliate plant under 10” tall with fragrant flowers that are usually 3 to 4” wide but can be up to 5". Culture: Summers are intermediate to warm with ample water. Winters are cooler and drier, but there is usually some percipitation as well as moisture from dew for much of the winter. Do not let the pseudobulbs shrivel. This can be grown potted or in baskets with an open medium that lets the roots dry quickly. I can also be grown mounted if humidity is high and it can be watered daily in hot weather. Parent: Cattleya xdolosa alba 'Iwata’s Yuki No Hana’ AM/AOS
