Cattleya dowiana outcross #4951.15 (approximately 15 seedlings per flask). Species:
Cattleya dowiana is from Costa Rica, northern Colombia and probably Panama where is it found at elevations from 2000 to 5300 meters. It grows in bright filtered light on large branches usually up high in the crown of trees. The plants are about 12” tall and have a single leaf. It can have 2-6 flowers on an inflorescense with velvety flowers that are 5 to 8” natural spread with a pleasant fragrance. This species has some rather exacting cultural requirements for success. Culture: Conditions remain fairly constant during the year with days averaging 75 to 80F and nights averaging 58 to 62F. It needs good humidity all year and abundant watering during the growing season. In the winter, rainfall in the habitat is low but heavy dew provides moisture. Reduce water but do not let it go dry for extended periods without moisture. It is critical that the roots dry quickly and are never subjected to wet or soggy medium. Cattleya dowiana. I do not have images of the actual parents, so show here a representative example. |
