Sold out Cattleya coccinea outcross probably 4N #4952 (approximately 25 seedlings per flask). The Species: This desireable Brazilian species grows at elevations from 2000 to 5500 feet in mist forests. In nature, these get heavy mist at night and are dry at the roots before mid-day. This is a cross that a friend made for me with to very fine plants that he was given by Terry Root, the founder of The Orchid Zone nursery. I would expect award quality plants. As with many of this species coming out of Japan, it is quite likely that these are 4N (tetraploid) plants. My friend didn’t take pictures of the plants, but did tell me that the color is more red than orange. He said the closest thing he found on the web was this image of Cattleya sophronitis ‘Florence’ FCC/AOS grown and photographed by Peter T Lin who was kind enought to give permission for me to use his image. Culture: It is an intermediate to cool grower that requires year round moisture. In the habitat they are wet from dew and fog in the early morning and dry off early in the day. The days can be warm but the nights cool off. I fertilize them with 1/4 strength fertilizer most of the year and a bit lower strength in winter. Many people grow this species potted in various media and containers such as moss in terra cotta and bark mix in plastic or net pot. I have the most success growing them mounted on wood with very little moisture retentive material in my humid environment. For most of the year they get daily water and are dry by afternoon. Air movement should be good. Similar to parents of this cross: Cattleya coccinea 'Florence' FCC/AOS grower photographer Peter T Lin |
