Cattleyopsis (Broughtonia) ortgiesiana #3995 outcross ('A' x '7033') (approximately 25 seedlings per flask).

The Species: This is now correctly named Cattleyopsis ortgiesiana. It is a Cuban endemic that is found at elevations sea level to 660 ft. The flowers are up to 2" across, with a flat presentation, and appear in late winter and early spring. They are held well above the plant and can have up to 20 flowers per inflorescence. A disinguishing feature between this and Broughtonia sanguinea is that the lip on this completely encircles the column.

Culture: This is a warm growing species that takes gets filter light. In the habitat the skies are clearest in the mornings and summers are cloudy. The rainfall from May through October is moderate and the rest of the year is less. But the winter and spring still have rainfall, so don't let the plant go dry for prolonged periods of time. Winter night averages are in the low 60's and days in the low 80's. In the late spring and summer the night averages are in the hight 60"' to low 70's and day averages are from the high 80's to low 90's. This has done well eoungh for me with minimum nights of 65F and maximum days in low 80's. During the growing season, water well and let the roots dry before watering again. They do best mounted if you can water regularly and have good humidity. If they are grown potted, choose a medium that will last well and allow air around the roots.
