Sold out Dendrobium canaliculatum v tattonianum wild #4379 (approximately 25 seedlings per flask). The Species: This species grows in Australia and New Guinea. These particular seedlings come from seed near Yorkey’s Knob in northeastern Australia’s coast. The plants can be up to 10” tall and have an upright spike. The flower color of this variety is white, with purple on the labellum and yellow tips to the petals and sepals. The 1” flowers last about 5 weeks and usually have 12 to 25 flowers per inflorescence, but they can have up to 60 flowers. Each growth will have multiple spikes over a period of several years. It grows as an epiphyte from sea level to 2500 ft in a variety of habitats and most frequently is found in humid conditions. Culture: These can be grown potted or mounted. It has been recommended to me that a non-organic medium such as rock is best for potted plants, but I have no personal experience. They do grow naturally on the trunks of paper-barked Melaleuca trees so a hard, durable wood should work well. Use little or no moisture retentive media at the roots. Grow established plants in bright light, with warm temperatures and let dry between waterings. They experience winter droughts in their native habitat and should have water decreased gradually during the winter. Start to water again once new growths are several inches tall. When spiking, water to keep slightly moist. Dendrobium canaliculatum v tattonianum. I do not have images of the actual parents, so show here some image that give a sense of the species. See the description above for flower color of this variety. |
