Dendrobium cucumerinum #5506 outcross (approximately 25 seedlings per flask). The Species: This miniature species is found in Southeastern Austraila from near Sydney to north of Brisbane. It grows as an epiphtye or lithophyte usually in river valleys, frequently overhanging streams. The leaves are less than 1.5" long, sucullent and cover with cucucumber-like warts which give it its name. The inflorescence is about 1" long and arises from the base of the leaf and the flowers present themselves just above the leaves with 2 to 10 per inflorescence. The flowers are lightly fragrant and up to 1" across, though not fully opening. They have a preference for growing on the underside of branches. Culture: In the habitat, average winter temperatures are from 42F to 70F and summer averages are mid 60'sF to high 80'sF. I have grown thisfor years in cool temperatures. Years ago I grew is with cold winters and hot summers and it did really well. Some clones will twine around the mount and others seem to want to grow away from it. In or out of bloom, this is an interesting plant. Representative images of Dendrobium cucumerinum |
