The Species: This is a choice member of what has been called the Oxyglossum section of Dendrobium. It is a small plant, usually under 3" tall, with clusters of purple/fuchsia flowers that arise from near the apex of the leafless pseudobulbs. The flowers last for many months, making it a really rewarding addition to a collection. It is found only in New Guinea where it grows at elevations from 2650 to 7900 ft.

Culture: I've grown this species both mounted and potted with equal success. For mounting I prefer hardwood or cork and for potted plants either fine bark in plastic or sometimes New Zealand sphagnum moss in terra cotta. It gets watered year round with dilute fertilizer. Good quality water is essential for success. It has grown and bloomed well in intermediate temperatures (56F to 80F) and in cool conditions (50F to 75F). Grow in moderate to moderately bright light. It is possible that it will also grow warmer, but I haven't tested that.
