Dendrobium tetragonum sibling cross #6112 (approximately 25 seedlings per flask). Species: This is from the east coast of Australia from Sidney north to Brisbane. It grows as an epiphyte at elevations up to 3300 ft in moist habitat with good air movement. This species is very often a pendant plant, but this particular one is an upright form. Which makes it ideal to grow in a pot. In the northern range (warmer) the plants are most often found at or below 1650 ft elevation. It is a pendant plant with dark green, leathery leaves. The somewhat spidery flowers are carried on a short inflorescence arising from the leaves at the apex of the pseudobulb. The flowers have a vanilla fragrance, can be 1.6 to 4.8" and last between 10 and 20 days. Culture: This species is frequently grown mounted to acommodate the pendant habit, this particular plant is an upgright grower so it can be potted or mounted. It is a cool to intermediate grower with average winter temperatures from the low 40's F to the mid 60's F. Average summer temperatures are in the mid 60"s F to the upper 70's F. Rainfall is heaviest in the late summer and early fall in the habitat. I water year round and use dilute fertilizer. They are in moderately bright light to shade. Dendrobium tetragonum: I do not have a good photograph of either of the parents, so show here a similar flower shape and color as an example. One difference is that the parent plants have a bit of maroon spotting on the lip. The last image is of one of the parents and shows the upright habit.
