Sold out Dendrobium tobaense ‘Sumatra’ large form 1747, from a wild seed pod that was on an imported plant. (approximately 25 seedlings per flask). The Species: This is a large flowered form of a wonderful species. The flowers are from 4 to 4.5" wide. It is in the nigrohisute (black haired) section of dendrobium. The species is from northern Sumatra and is found at elevations from 2500 to 5000 feet. It grows as an epiphyte. The inflorescence carries several flowers that open successively. I am told that it is now very scarce in the habitat. Culture: I grow this species with 65 degree minimum night temperatures in moderate light. I have grown it in intermediate conditions also. It likes to dry between waterings, but not be left dry for any sustained period. I have found it does best for me mounted. Others do grow it potted, usually in medium bark so the roots can dry quickly. In the winter it may benefit from reduction in water and fertilizer, but not a hard dry rest.
