Sold out Disa thodei wild #4189 (approximately 25 seedlings per flask). The Species: This grows southern Africa in damp alpine grassland and along streams in the Eastern Cape and in KwaZulu-Natal from 6000 to 10,000 ft elevations. The climate over much of its range is severe. The rainy season is in the summer months. Rainfall in the winter months is less with some areas receiving only 15 to 30% of the total rainfall during winter. Snow and frost can occur at the higher elevations of its range. The inflorescence is about 12” tall with 3 to 8 of the fragrant flowers per spike. The flowers are just under 1/2”. Culture: I do not have any personal experience growing this species. Descriptions of the habitat would suggest cool temperatures with lots of water in the summer growing season and less in the winter, though not a complete drought. Disa thodei: Representative species. Images used with kind permission of Lourens Grobler.
