The Species: Hintonella mexicana is a very rarely seen, super mini epiphyte from Mexican. It is the only species in the genus. The plant is small, up to 2” tall. The long-lasting, slightly fragrant flowers are 3/8” wide and carried 1 to 6 per inflorescence. It is found in the central and western highlands of Mexico at elevations from 5600 to 8550 ft. It grows on small branches and twigs in pine/oak forest or humid deciduous forest that has fog and mist much of the time. Rainfall is most from June to September and very limited the rest of the year. Average winter are night in high 40’s and days in the mid 50’s F.  Summer averages are low 70’s to low 80’s F

Culture: Grow in moderate or filter light with good air movement. I have always grown this mounted on cork or hardwood, but it should be able to grow in small pots. The roots should dry quickly and don’t allow the medium to become stale. From Jun through November, regular watering with dilute fertilizer is recommended. From November to April in the habit there is very little rain, but there is usually dew and fog to keep the plants from shrivelling so light mistings are necessary. Discontinue fertlizer during the winter.
