Masdevallia strobelii outcross #5672 and 6429 (Masdevallia strobelii '3601' x '3596') I made 2 capsules using the same parents in reverse (a reciprocal cross) and will ship them interchangeably. (approximately 25 seedlings per flask). The Species: This is a charming species that will grow under lights and in cool and intermediate temperature. Found in cloud forest in southeast Ecuador and Peru at 4600 to 5600 ft elevation. The plant is 2.5 to 3.5” tall, each inflorescence carries a single fragrant flower and each leaf can have more than one flowering stem. This makes for a great show on a small plant. Culture: I have always grown this plant in a cool greenhouse but it does well in intermediate conditions as well. It is more tolerant of warm summer nights than many Masdevallia species. It can be grown potted or mounted. For potted plants I prefer a fine bark mix. Plants thrive in conditions that are evenly moist (but not soggy) and can approach dryness between waterings, but not go dry for any extended period of time. It gets dilute fertilizer all year. Grow in shade or moderate light. Repot before the medium begins to break down. The first image is a detailed view of the glands on the flower. The second is a nice flowering of the capsule parent and the third image is of a first blooming of the pollen parent. An unrelated clone that shows a detailed view of the glands on a flower. Parent plant: Masevallia strobelii '3601' Parent plant: Masdevallia strobelii '3596' |
