When the Department of Forestry notified me of a harvest near my home, I took the time to learn the process the harvest plan goes through before trees are actually cut down. Water scarcity and rapid run-off (erosion) issues motivated me to first protest and then to link with others in protest of an ever increasing number of timber harvests on private land. These logging projects are unregulated by Sonoma County law and are managed by over- extended bureaucracy.
Many of Occidental's townspeople were shocked to see truckload after truckload of trees being hauled down out of the hills and on their way to the saw mills. We wanted to have input on the decision-making process but were ill-informed. I wrote a pamphlet to inform the public how they might make a difference in saving their neighborhood trees.
The free pamphlet, Logging In Your Neighborhood? , has been made availible in local stores thanks to the sponsorship of the Rural Alliance. Please take the time to read it. This is an issue which could affect you and your neighbors sooner than you think.
