Super Puzzle Fighter II X

After logging quite a few hours on this game, I was surprised to find how fun it was to play. I was expecting it to be another Tetris rip-off, which would keep its excitement for about a half-hour or so. I was wrong. The game is different from the others in its genre, and I'm not sure if it's the little Street Fighter characters blasting each other with fireballs as you clear blocks, or if it's the way you can have a magical comeback from near death, but this game stands out from the rest.

This is one of those games that is really fun to play two-player, and seeing the look on your buddy's face as you drop 63 blocks on his side is enough to make you want to play it again. The way you clear blocks is by dropping a flashing, circular piece on its matching color, and any blocks of the same color touching each other are cleared. When you clear a large amount of blocks, your character does a super special move, complete with flashing background colors. You can even taunt by pressing select, just like in Street Fighter Alpha. Little things like that make this game stand out from the rest.

It is simple enough to play easily right from the start, and after about a half-hour or so you should have the basics down pat. But the game has many secrets, such as each character having his own special pattern of blocks, so it has a lot more to it than meets the eye. Figuring out how to use each character to his full potential could take a long time to master, so the game may have more replay value than one might think. If you're a fan of Tetris-style puzzle games, and also a fan of Street Fighter or Darkstalkers, then this game is a must buy. Anyone else may wish to check this game out as well, because it is a refreshing change from all the other average puzzle games out there.
