Panoramic Hill Walk Itinerary July 11, 2017 U C Stadium, 1923 - had dramatic effect on neighborhood, straddles Hayward Fault Canyon Road: the lower end of the old road up Strawberry Creek valley 9 & 11 Panoramic Way: Price Apartments (Julia Morgan, 1912) Commissioned by professor of Latin; each of 4 apartments has own maid's quarters #23: Boke House (Maybeck, 1901, "Swiss chalet"); George Boke was law prof, reformer 1 Orchard Lane: Walter Steilberg House (1922); he designed many houses on hill 4 Mosswood Lane: Steilberg Fabricrete Cottage (1930) Designed after 1923 fire, uses little wood; note mini-spiral staircase, breakfast alcove View of stadium to left 13 Mosswood Road: Bell-Feldman House (FLW, 1939 & 1974); hexagonal plan 21 Mosswood Road: Mouser House (1888, moved and altered 1910) 29 Mosswood Road: Parsons House (W Steilberg, 1921); had many artistic guests, lodgers: Wm. Keith, Ansel Adams, Pr. B H Lehman, author of 1925 novel "Wild Marriage" 37 Mosswood Road: Allen House (Walter Ratcliff, 1911) Arden Steps (100 of them), used on return trip down hill. At end of Mosswood, look down on canyon as it was. 11 Mosswood: WL Jepson House (J Morgan, 1925 & 1930); was professor of botany at UCB, interested in Steilberg's daughter, struck out Dangerous curve here; stay to edge of road by Straight Stair Up Orchard Lane; many steps (161) but several landings to pause at 70 Arden Road (named for Will's forest): Gardner Cottage over garage (W Wurster, 1941) 255 Panoramic Way: Havens House (1941) built for Shattuck heir; hard to see from road, alas Up Arden Path; watch your step #280: Frank La Fontaine House (~1906) "the old Frenchman" built one of earliest homes on hill. Tennis court, sprinklers, fire hoses added in 1930's #299: Miss M. Hodgen's House (Elizabeth Austin, 1926); recording studio in basement Up to connector, sundial, Oakland. Then down the Arden Steps to Mosswood and return. Watch for traffic at hairpin.
