September 29, 2019 — To be discussed: A Personal Matter (novel, 1964) and "Aghwee the Sky Monster" (short story, 1964)

Primary reading — Novel by Oe: A Personal Matter (個人的な体験 "A Personal Experience"), 1964

Primary reading — Short story by Oe: "Aghwee, the Sky Monster" (空の怪物アグイー "Monster of/in the Sky Aghwee"), 1964

Short story: "Lavish are the Dead" (Oe, 1957)

This is one of his very first literary efforts once he had left his pre-medical track and was part of the literature department. "Grotesque realism" is an important techniquge for this short story.

Essay excerpt: "Rabelais and His World" (Bakhtin, 1940)

This was a pivotal essay for Oe, read probably in 1957 or perhaps 1956 and its effect can be seen immediately in his writings. This technique will remain important to him for decades though, to my mind, it seems to fade in the 2000s at some point.

Essay: "Existentialism is a humanism" (Sartre, 1946)

This is a succinct statement on existentialism that, I believe, is close to how Oe viewed it. "We do not do as we please, yet we are responsible for what we are: that is the brute fact."
