Print resources end up out of date as soon as they are published, but are an excellent way to browse and to locate old materials. You can find printed bibliographies in the library catalog by using subject headings such as:

To Locate Anthologies:

Use subject headings that contain the phrase "translations into English" "Translations, English" or "translations from Japanese"  The wrap-around feature of the library catalog allows you to search by the subdivisions of the subject headings (Dictionaries, Translations into/from) as well as the main subject headings (Japanese literature, Japanese poetry, Women authors, Japanese)

Please note that individual titles in most of the anthologies are listed in the above databases and that once you have identified the title of the anthology, you can search by that title in the library catalog.

To Locate Translations of Individual Authors' Works

To locate monographs in our library collection, you should search by the author's name. You may search the author index or the subject index. If you search by subject it will look something like this: Matsumoto, Seicho, 1909- Translations, English. Sometimes it is Translations into English. To be safe, stop at translations!  Another option is to search by author, for example Matsuo Basho, and then limit by language = English.  A final option is to try a keyword search to see if the poem, short story, or novel that you are looking for is listed in the table of contents or in one of the title fields.

Some Specific Examples:

Searching by author: Ibuse, Masuji  will bring you a list of titles.  Look for the ones that are in English or have the word English in the title. For example:

Ibuse, Masuji.   Waves : two short novels. Tokyo ; New York : Kodansha International ; New York : Distributed in the United States by Kodansha International/USA, through Harper & Row, 1986.
    Check Availability: PL830.B8 A22 1986

Matsuo, Basho. Basho's Narrow Road: Spring and Autumn Passages: Two Works. Transl. with annotations by Hiroaki Sato. Berkeley, Calif.: Stone Bridge Press, 1996.
     Check Availability: PL794.4.Z5 A3613 1996
