EA109 – Special attendance notes

Two events during the semester require that we split enrolled students into two groups and ask those two groups to attend class separately.

Tea Identification Day

On this day students try to identify what teas are which. Since this is a bit time-consuming, I split the class into two groups. This event is scheduled over two sessions. Therefore on one day you do not attend class; on the other day you participate in tea identification.

Berkeley Art Museum visit

Lynn Kimura of the Berkeley Art Museum displays for students tea objects that are part of the holdings of the library. This is an unusual opportunity to view up close (not from behind glass) tea cups and paintings that are man hundreds of years old. However, the special viewing room rules sets a limit of 20 guests. Therefore I split the class in half and take two different groups on two different class sessions. The half that is not going to the library attends class as usual and watches the first segment of a film. Thus, after two sessions all students have had the opportunity to go to the museum and view the first portion of the film. On the third session we are all once again together, to watch the conclusion of the film. The museum visit is optional. The film, on the other hand, is part of the material tested during Midterm 02.
