What is a good translation to use for this course?

I am trying to design materials in a way so that either Edward Seidensticker's unabridged translation or Royall Tyler's more recent unabridged translation are workable choices for this course. I do have opinions about these two translations because they are very different; but in the big picture, I think it doesn't serve us well to decide one over the other.

• The Tale of Genji, trans. by Edward Seidensticker. Knopf, 1978. (1118 pages)
• The Tale of Genji, trans. by Royall Tyler. Penguin Classics, 2002. (1216 pages) (This paperback is somewhat better than the hardback edition that came out one year earlier.)

Abridged editions of any kind will not be useful.

The older complete translation by Arthur Waley is interesting and has its strong points but will not be referenced in this course.
