Most likely one of the periodic clean-out-the-basement occasions, and Father's backed the Rambler all the way up to the bottom of the steps to load up for a trip to the dump. I kept expecting the police to come along and hassel us. Unlikely, though, since these were still the days when everybody knew everybody.

Before the basement became so crowded with non-disposable items as to make it impractical, we could empty it completely every so often and hose the whole thing out.
