Frosty Steps
c.1959. Photographer: Paul. 2-1/4 square Kodacolor negative.

The redwood still looks new, so this must be within months of completion. Previously, the individual steps consisted of just dirt behind a plank held up by pieces of pipe driven into the ground.

The winter iris are in bloom along the left; you can also make out one of the tokay grape vines near the top, and just barely the row of blackberry bushes that ran along this entire section of stairs. The grapes we just ate, the blackberries also went into Mother's batches of jam and jelly.

The trip up the hill to the garage involved three or four flights of stairs, depending on how you counted. We had good leg muscles.

When The City of Penton was established, this thoroughfare became its main drag, named, appropriately enough, "Garage Ave."
