May 1963 Street lights were mercury vapor in those days, hence the bluish cast rather than the reddish hue of today's sodium vapor lamps. The colored lights strung overhead served two purposes: they'd be lit up on Saturday nights when the Rose Bowl was going (this would be the last year for that), and later served as part of the Christmas street decorations. The red neon sign toward the left proclaims the availability of color TV at the "All Channel" television store. After I took this shot, I may have wandered down there to see if a color show was playing on the one in the window, and gaze longingly at it. Ektachrome slide by Paul Penna |
