Wrapped around each telephone pole is a poster for a charity campaign; it appears to be for whatever the United Way was called then. At the lower left behind the red flag, the "Free Parking" sign refers to the dirt lot next to St. Patrick's, today occupied by the parish hall and school playground. Way down the street on the right are two long-gone downtown buildings: the little square one housed Maybelle and Archie Culpepper's real estate office, just north of where the parking lot is today, and beyond that, the Chevron sign for Cliff Archer's gas station. Those are mercury vapor street lights, which must have only recently replaced the old incandescents. Colored lights for the Rose Bowl and Christmas are strung overhead.
