Riesling, Riesling, Riesling, a celebration of Riesling, an exploration of Riesling - for three days last July, Chateau Ste. Michelle was Riesling Central. More than 70 Riesling producers and leading experts from seven countries and six U.S. states had come to the chateau to attend Riesling Rendezvous 2008. "Welcome! Wilkommen, Bienvenue, G/day!" A Riesling-packed program included workshops, blind panel tastings, discussions, and perfect pairing of Riesling with food.

The grand success of Riesling Rendezvous was a recent memory when I traveled to Chateau Ste. Michelle to talk with head winemkaer Bob Bertheau about the amazing turnaround of a grape that not too long ago was considered hopelessly out of fashion - dismissed out of had as sweet and one-dimensional - into a grape worthy of a celebratory and informative Rendezvous.

A birthday cake seemingly the size of a football field presented a bit of a challenge when it came to the blowing out of sixty-seven candles. That done, a cinematically worthy moment parted the single cake into two, symbolizing that Coppola's viticultural empire was now officially divided between his Rutheford property in Napa County, Niebaum-Coppola, and the Geyserville yet-to-be named property in Sonoma County......
