So, what can we do to improve amateur networks?
As extreme as the problems are, I think there are some things amateurs can
do to improve the capacity and speed of our information networks.
These improvements come directly from Shannon's equation presented
on a previous page.
Increase Signal
use OCARs
Break bad paths into multiple good paths. Examine and select terrain/sites carefully.
Minimize path lengths(pdf). Add nodes, increase user density.
Focus transmit power
use highly directional antennas(pdf)
Use appropriate radio hardware
Increase Bandwidth
Reduce Noise (and sensitivity to noise)
use spread spectrum to reduce multipath degradation
use power control to maximize sharing of the spectrum
Cooperate!
