Trying to promote the Vandermark 5 appearance at Cafe Du Nord. They'll be playing three shows: June 30, July 1, July 2.
Ken Vandermark, if you're not familiar with him, is a pivotal member of Chicago's free-jazz scene, with deep roots in the original free jazz (e.g. Ornette Coleman's early stuff). Fairly young guy, about 40, who's been awarded a Macarthur genius grant. He doesn't get out to California much, so these shows are well worth checking out.
If you're more interested in weekend shows, Marco Eneidi is doing a trio show at New Langton Arts on Saturday, 6/28/03. Accompanying Marco (alto sax) will be Peter Valsamis (drums) and Lisle Ellis (bass). Marco's known for fast free-jazz improvising, great stuff.
