Featuring Ahu Gural, some woman speaking Turkish. The "composition" consists of Moran "playing along" with her words on piano. That is, he's mimicking the patterns of her speech, note for note, and doing this live, no less. Neat trick, and an interesting study of the musicality of the spoken word. This new CD has three such tracks.

Kind of a supergroup, with Gebhard Ullman (clarinet/sax), Joe Fonda (bass), Michael Jefry Stevens (piano) and, for this CD, Han Bennik (drums). Very much a jazz group, using some free ideas but working from a traditional base. They'll be playing at Yoshi's in Oakland on Monday, Nov. 10, 2003.

This is a cool little project: drums, bass (sometimes electric) and two guitars (varying between acoustic and electric). Weird, sinewy, proto-fusion pieces, fresh and original, often funky or arrhythmically rocking.

Fun, catchy and sometimes out-there-abstract band led by Dan Plonsey back around 1989-1992. Very good stuff; I arrived on the scene too late to ever see them live, unfortunately. BUT WAIT! Three of the five band members -- Plonsey (sax), Randy Porter (guitar), and Ward Spangler (drums) -- are doing a reunion show Oct. 29, 2003, at 2110 Shattuck in Berkeley. Hooray!
