Great new stuff from Tim, a 2-CD live set of his band Science Friction. Keyboards provide misty, ambient backgrounds while sax, guitar and drums drive some energetic, insistent, off-kilter beats. Jaggedly swinging, and very much cooking and alive.

One sax and two drummers, nice improvisatory jams based on Ochs compositions. The drummers are local guys Scott Amendola and Donald Robinson, both fantastic jazz musicians with nicely contrasting styles. Both can play loud or soft very well, but I like Amendola's hard-groove playing and Robinson's fast, deft, quiet work on the snare. The trio has played around town quite a bit the past few years, so it's great to see them documented on CD, albeit a hard-to-find one. (Ochs sent me notes on where to get 'em; I'll post the info on this page in a day or so.)

Previously unreleased tapes, rediscovered! Cool twisty bop in Andrew's famous '60s style, of course. This particular track resurfaced on a Bobby Hutcherson album under the title "Catta."
