Played "Alice's Restaurant," as I usually do when I'm in the studio on the day after Thanksgiving.
Anthony Braxton will be in town on Thursday, December 11, performing with a ten-piece band including some great local musicians. The show's at the Victoria Theater in San Francisco. I'm hoping to do a Braxton special, or at least spin a ton of his music, on next week's show. This week, since I had extra time due to the sports schedule, I played two tracks -- one standard bebop jazz, the other a more abstract "modern" Braxton composition -- as kind of a teaser.

One of two Eddie Gale reissues from Blue Note, the other being
Black Rhythm Happening, listed above. Cool stuff with some
interesting concepts, including choir vocals. Both albums close with
a long, psychedelic-exploratory track (this track, in this case).
You can find Eddie on the Web at www.eddiegale.com.
* Andrew Hill -- "Sideways" -- Passing Ships (Blue Note, 2003; recorded 1969)
This CD was a quasi-reissue of Arlo's classic album, with remastered takes on most
of the songs and a new live rendition of the title track. The song is a
Thanksgiving classic for "classic rock" stations, the original being
an 18-minute monologue on littering and the draft and all kindsa things.
This version has a less satisfying vocal part -- Arlo's comedic timing
isn't as crisp and his voice sounds even weirder than usual -- but
it comes with a great "punch line" about the Nixon presidency.
