Friday, January 16th, 2004 ... 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. ... KZSU, 90.1 FM
Format:
ARTIST -- "TRACK TITLE" -- ALBUM TITLE (LABEL, YEAR)
Bill Bruford's Earthworks -- "Bridge of Inhibition" -- Bill Bruford's Earthworks (E.G., 1987)
* Tsurubami -- "Gekkyukekkaichi" -- Gekkyukekkaichi (Strange Attractors, 2003)
Long-form drone pieces from members of Acid Mothers Temple. Pretty.
* Ehinger, Lindemann, Pitteloud -- "Red" -- E L P (Unit, 2003)
* Peter Kowald, Miya Masaoka, Gino Robair -- "View Twenty" -- Illuminations (Rastascan, 2003)
* Scott Rosenberg -- "Toys" [excerpt] -- Creative Orchestra Music, Chicago 2001 (New World, 2003)
* David S. Ware String Ensemble -- "Threads" -- Threads (Thirsty Ear, 2003)
-- 4:00 p.m. --
* David S. Ware String Ensemble"Carousel of Light" -- Threads (Thirsty Ear, 2003)
Veering from the quartet format, Ware adds a violin, a viola and
a string synthesizer (courtesy Matthew Shipp) to his band.
Very different sound, with Ware's saxophone absent on the 13-minute
title track. A couple of shorter tracks are
sax-drum duets, more in the free-jazzy style Ware is known for.
Project Pimiento -- "Caravan" and "Star Trek" -- Magical Moods of the Theremin (Tru Blu Lu, 2003)
Cool local band that revels in retro loungy jazz, doing covers like the
tracks above, or "Diamonds are Forever", or "Peter Gunn." Features a real
theremin and some sultry high vocals from Miss Lola Bombay. They'll be
appearing on Wednesday Night Live on Jan. 21, 2004.
* Henry Kaiser -- "Meet the Flintstones" -- Lemon Fish Tweezer (Cuneiform, 1994; orig released 1991)
We took this from a 2-CD retrospective called Playola which, sadly,
is not commercially available. This track is a spoken-word story that's
touching and hilarious ... see the text at www.henrykaiser.net.
* Close Embrace of the Earth -- "MU4" -- Close Embrace of the Earth (Abzu, 2003)
* Frederic Blondy/Le Quan Ninh -- "Le Hasard Est Une Main Plus Sure" -- Exaltatio Utriusque Mundi (Potlatch, 2003)
I excerpted the first part of this track last week. The second half is
actually more interesting... so I excerpted from the second half this week.
Duet improvisations, piano and percussion, with a dark, almost industrial
sound.
* Daniel Levin Quartet -- "Non-Sense" -- Don't Go It Alone (Riti, 2003)
-- 5:00 p.m. --
* ROVA -- "The M'ad-Din" [composed by Wadada Leo Smith] -- Resistance (Victo, 2003)

* Chucho Valdes -- "Solar" -- New Conceptions (Blue Note, 2003)
* Larry Stabbins -- "Singing" -- Monadic (Emanem, 2003)
* Stone House w/Joe Morris on bass -- "Likewise" -- Likewise (Riti, 2003)
