Highly spirited free jazz big band, a '70s classic. Lots of
march tempos and wildly funky sprees. This was a
mixed-race band originating out of South Africa, so they were a bit touchy
politically. Cuneiform's done a good job putting out old recordings.
* Simon Nabatov and Han Bennik -- "Foaming" -- Chat Room (Leo, 2003)
Recorded on our annual Day of Noise, "released" by KZSU's own label.
Steve Lacy -- "Axieme Part 2" -- Axieme (Red, 1993; recorded 1975)
Great live CD from this band, with Gebhard Ullmann (sax), Joe Fonda (bass), Michael Jefry Stevens (piano), and George Schuller (drums). The first
three guys have managed to stay together as Conference Call for a few years
now, making semi-regular tours in Europe and even America with varying
all-star drummers (Matt Wilson and Han Bennik). Like Dave
Holland's Extended Play (ECM, 1993), this CD shows how
great a regularly performing jazz unit can be. The music crosses between
calmly executed chamber jazz and energetic free-bop.
* Denman Maroney -- "Part 5" -- Fluxations (New World, 2003)
Very nice set of short (sub-5-minute) improvisations from the
recently deceased Kowald on bass,
joined by the great local improvisers Masaoka (koto) and Robair (drums/percussion). Nice fluid pieces that quickly set up and sustain their
moods.
* Josh Abrams -- "Mental Politican" -- Cipher (Delmark, 2003)
